As things approach the mid 21st century, the world has gone to war.

Much of the technology is similar to what is available in the late 20th and early 21st century, though some things have moved on. Laser weapons are present, though they haven't replaced the reliable and cheaper kinetic weapons of the early 21st.

Drone are a lot more prevalent, and have become larger with more automated systems and heavier weapons.

Most of the conflict is between Western Europe and Russia, though China and the USA are also at war. The latter tends to be longer ranged engagements, fighting over proxy territory, whilst the European war is far closer to home for both sides.

Nukes have been used, but in a tactical rather than full on nuclear war.
