| Checkered Shield |
A chivalrous fighting order of the Lady of Paladins, sponsored the Order of Hyvrik. It was founded by Andasin I in 622 to guard the northern border of Kanday.
The order takes its name from the legendary shield of Larani.
Many of the order are stationed along the border with Rethem, and skirmishes between this order and the Copper Hook are frequent, though unsanctioned by either government.
The following are examples of typical members of the Checkered Shield. In reality, skills and related attributes will vary.
Human, age 21
Young knight of the Checkered Shield.
This knight is a young member of the Order, who is not greatly experienced. Such knights are often the second (or third) sons of nobles who are unlikely to inherit land of any worth, though a few are truly dedicated to the cause. Normally, those who feel strongly about the worship of Larani will enter into the more direct service of the Church, and become a priest.
In theory, all members of the the Checkered Shield follow the codes of Chivalry. Practice can vary, but all will want to appear to be chivalric at the very least.
Human, age 30
A veteran knight, with much experience behind him.
An experienced member of the Order, such veterens will tend to lead their own companies.
The purpose of the Checkered Shield is to guard the borders of Kanday from the Kingdom of Rethem, and this often brings them into contact with the Copper Hook.
Enmity between the Shield and the Hook is intense, and if it wasn't for the fact that neither King is currently desiring a war with their neighbour, open warfare will have finished one of the two orders off long ago.
Skirmishes between the two are common however. Despite their differences, both are chivalric in their own way. Both follow a war god, and both believe in rules and the power of Law.
Since neither order is particularly large, they cannot afford to loose many knights. Skirmishes tend to be orderly affairs. Ambushes are common, though tend to give the other side time to at least mount their horse. Fatalities are uncommon - what is more normal is retreat or capture. Ransoms are paid frequently, and several knights have been 'guests' of their mortal enemies on many occasions.
