Riders of King Enstig | Version 1.2 ( 2006/01/31 ) |
| Cairn Hills |
In the Cairn Hills are sometimes seen ghostly huscurls riding as if for battle. Some have also said of seeing horsemen of flesh and blood, who have thundered past then vanished as if into a mist. Whether these riders are incorporeal, or can take on physical form is unknown.
The riders are thought to be the cursed men of King Enstig of the Hill, a powerful lord who, 300 years ago, made a deal with an Elf King for power and a wife of unearthly beauty. His influence grew over many years, but his interest in riding and battle grew whilst his interest in his wife wained. One morning he returned from a night's riding to find his wife in the arms of another. He struck her, and she cursed him to never leave his horse for as long as he lived. Since then he and his men have ridden on hunts in the Cairn Hills, never setting foot on the ground.
The Riders are reported about every 10 years. The King is sometimes known as King Enstig Longhair.
