Igia | Version 1.8 ( 2005/08/14 ) |
| Igia |
Igia is the goddess of the sea and sailing. She is the wife of Uvangar, who is Lord of the Deep Ocean. He allows her free reign over the upper seas whilst he dwells in the depths.
Unknown to her husband, she has a lover called Moern, who is the Rornic sea god. The Brytish consider Moern to be a minor god, giving him domain of the fish and other sea creatures except for dolphins which are considered sacred to Igia.
Igia is depicted as a mature woman, sometimes with legs and sometimes half fish. She rules from a submerged island named Mortheana which is built from coral and shells. After heavy storms it is said to rise above the waves somewhere southwest of Jarneyland.
Those who worship Igia are those whose lives depend on the sea. Fishermen, sailors and vikings all pay her homage in a desire for safe passage. The sea is a harsh mistress, and those who sail upon her are a superstitious lot. They will treat her priests with respect, and consider it bad luck not to give one free passage when it is asked for.
