| Attercop Wood |
On the northwestern border of Weidany lays Attercop Wood. It is a useful guardian against Bryteland, for few dare to travel its paths. The wood is thick and dense, having suffered little exploration by men. This brings with it the usual dangers, but they are compounded by the main hunters of the region.
The woods are the hunting groups of a species of giant spider. Up to a metre across, they are tree dwellers, hunting by laying in wait for prey and pouncing from above when they get within range. The spiders do not use webs, but do make use of a virulent poison that rapidly incapasitates prey.
The typical tactic is to bite, then retreat and wait for the poison to take effect. The spiders fear fire, and tend to be wary of anything that puts up a fight.
The western end of the wood, which is bordered by the sea, is relatively free of spiders. Much of the area consists of salt water marshes, together with mud or sandy stretches of ground hiding quicksand deep pools. Nevertheless, there are a number of human settlements along the coast - mostly fishing villages.
