Mapping the Four Cities

Map Client Data

Welcome to the Great Cities Mapping project. This is a grand project to produce uptodate and accurate maps of the world of Cities. It is similar to the map produced by Dark Satanic, and the initial set of map data was obtained from there. It has some extra features (e.g. keeping track of how uptodate the map is, and note taking), and allows the display of much bigger areas at a time. Click on the map on the right to view the part of the world you are interested in.

If you want to contribute to the mapping project, then you need to use Firefox, or something capable of running Greasemonkey scripts. Ihere is a client script available which will automatically update the map as you move around in the world. See here for details.

If you see locations with a name of 'x', then they have been mapped by someone carrying a Map of some kind. If you have a map (a 'Small Map', 'Map' or 'Big Map') equipped, then it reads information from this and uses it to update the server. Such data is considered unreliable, so it only inserts previously undiscovered locations. Maps seem to not work below 200S.

The Story So Far

Currently we have accurately mapped 84861 locations (85590 including areas not seen directly), stretching from 25W to 283E, and from 601S to 255N.

Our top ten mappers (those who have visited the largest proportion of the map) are as follows:

  1. phw : 81904 (96%)
  2. Cthu1hu : 53639 (63%)
  3. Sam : 51120 (60%)
  4. lastaiaiai : 38505 (45%)
  5. ethifel : 36565 (43%)
  6. jpv : 33471 (39%)
  7. Sertularian : 33043 (38%)
  8. Ravensdance : 29676 (34%)
  9. Isambard : 27822 (32%)
  10. Kaos Dragon : 26991 (31%)

Places of Interest

Key

If you switch on the freshness view, then you can see how uptodate the map data is. Older data is displayed as fainter, whilst new data is clear and crisp. This helps to identify areas of the map which may have changed since the data was recorded.

Image Approximate age
Fresh data, less than a week old. This is also useful to be able to see where people have been recently.
Stale data, up to about a month old.
Old data, up to about 3 months old.
Ancient data, over 3 months old.

Developer Stuff

There's a couple of options which can be added to the URL when displaying the map which will change how it is displayed. There is no front end for these yet, and they may be lost when you choose one of the other options.

Option Effect
&self=true Display only the bits of the map which the currently selected user has actually seen. Requires a user to be selected.
&small=true Display the map squares smaller, with no text. Causes the area being displayed to be increased slightly.
